One of the annual traditions of Miss World is the Charity Gala Event, where all Miss World contestants bring with them a special gift, be it a personalized painting or a valuable token from their country, and auction it for a good cause.

Miss World Charity Gala - First cheque presented by the Beauty Crown Hotel, ¥92,550 ($14,000), money raised through ticket and food and drink for the night.

All proceeds of the Charity Gala will go to benefitting the Sanya Orphanage founded by Miss World Chairwoman, Julia Morley, in 2005 that houses and nurtures over 60 orphaned youth. To open the show, the children of the orphanage sang modern renditions of classic Christmas jingles, which had all of the contestants and audience dancing and clapping along!

Some of the incredible items that were auctioned this year included trainers signed by Usain Bolt, brought by Miss Jamaica, and one-of-a-kind artworks and cultural emblems.

Many VIP’s were in attendance, including Chief Mandela, grandson of Nelson Mandela, and several Miss World’s including reigning Miss World Rolene Strauss, Miss World 2013 Megan Young, & Miss World 2012 Wenxia Yu, Miss World 2001 Agbani Darego, Miss World 2002 Azra Akin, Miss World 2008 Ksenia Sukhinova and Miss World 1988 Linda Pétursdóttir.

This reporter caught up with our some of our past Miss Worlds, who during their reign have travelled all over the world for the Beauty with a Purpose mission, to find out what exactly this annual Charity Gala, which also took place in their respective years, means to them.

Miss World Charity Gala - Rolene Strauss (Miss World 2014), Ksenia Sukhinova (Miss World 2008), Megan Young (Miss World 2013), Azra Akın (Miss World 2002), Yu Wenxia (Miss World 2012) Agbani Darego (Miss World 2001)

Rolene Strauss, Miss World 2014: I had such a great time during the charity gala evening in my year and I brought with me a piece of the Robben Island fence to auction. Robben Island is the island where the incredible Nelson Mandela was held prisoner in South Africa. It was amazing to see everyone bring something special to raise funds for charity. The difference we make, together, is just so much greater.

Miss World Charity Gala - Megan Young (Miss World 2013)

Megan Young, Miss World 2013: The charity gala is so important because the money raised goes to a wonderful cause. We’re coming together from all corners of the globe to help out which is so heartwarming. In my year, I brought pearl earrings from Jewelmer to represent the beautiful islands of the Philippines as we are known to be the Pearl of the Orient, and I am so happy that with just one gift, I have helped to empower the lives of others.

Wenxia Yu, Miss World 2012: I will never forget the charity gala evening in my year. I brought a Chinese painting, featuring 62 peony flowers on it, symbolizing the 62nd Miss World pageant. While the purpose of the evening is to raise much needed funds for charity, it is also about love and just how one action can impact the lives of other people. This is why the charity gala touches everyone’s hearts.

The total amount raised this evening was just ¥260,000 (over $40,000) but that’s not all! This time we want all of you to be able to get involved!

Starting in January, a selection of this year’s auction gifts will be put up for auction online, and you will all be able to bid for a piece of Miss World Treasure!

After Miss World 2015 ends, we will let you all know exactly which gifts will be available, and every week we will auction a new gift, with all proceeds going to Beauty with a Purpose!
