Mariana Garcia of Bolivia demonstrating the correct method of tooth brushing to school children

As part of Bolivia’s Beauty with a Purpose project, this year’s representative for the Miss World contest, Mariana Garcia, has been helping raise awareness of dental health in children.

A study in Latin America revealed that in Bolivia, around two thirds of the population suffers from tooth decay or cavities, with children making up the highest numbers of those affected.

This can be particularly debilitating for them, making it difficult to concentrate on their studies or manage their food. This can lead to problems such as malnutrition and it is thought that poor tooth condition also contributes to rheumatic fever and many other ailments.

Mariana has been working in association with Udabol University to educate children about proper dental care. Visiting schools and educating them about the components of teeth, as well as demonstrating correct techniques for brushing has been an important part of the project.
