In particular this year, El Salvador deserves a special mention for their efforts. 35,000 dollars was raised for Children in Need. Our heartfelt congratulations go out to the organisers.

Apart from the commercial work and personal appearances which Miss World is contracted to undertake in each country we visit, we feel it is equally important to set aside time to allow each country the chance to hold a special function attended by Miss World. For example a Miss World Fashion Show, a Miss World Luncheon or Dinner, or any other similar events involving Miss World where all monies raised from either ticket sales, raffles, tombolas, or donations could be entirely donated to the underprivileged and handicapped children of that country. The Miss World Contest, unlike any other contest of its kind created a theme ‘Beauty with a Purpose’. To this day it is the only International contest to have adopted such a theme and it makes me very proud indeed when I visit our overseas franchise holders to see so many of them who have also adopted our theme ‘Beauty with a Purpose’ for their National Contest.

Thanks to our dear respected friend and franchise holder, Paul Lee, Malaysia is just one of the countries which through the Miss Malaysia World Contest has raised huge sums of money for their children.

During my visit to Malaysia this year, a privilege which has been afforded me every year since 1977, we stayed in Ipoh, a place famous for its tin mining. What a tumultuous and exotic welcome we received from the marvellous people of Ipoh, for over 20,000 of them turned out to greet us. It was a truly unforgettable experience.

Whilst in Ipoh we visited the Kampung Tawas School for the physically handicapped children. This is indeed a school which the people of Ipoh can feel most proud.

I am extremely touched by the genuine concern of Tan Sri Dato Seri Jeyaratnan of Ipoh, Chairman of the Miss Malaysia World Contest. It was under his chairmanship that so much money has been raised to help and support homes and schools such as these, where children look so happy and cared for. He certainly is a man of action and we are proud to have his full support for Malaysia’s ‘Beauty with a Purpose’ Theme. This fine country is just one of many which is working alongside us improving the quality of life for many of the World’s children.

In particular this year, El Salvador deserves special mention for their efforts. With very little time to organize their contest, 35,000 dollars was raised for children in need. Our heartfelt congratulations go to the organizers.
